When the Tables Turn: The Global South in an Era of Instability

As part of the development of partnership relations with the DAKSHIN Global South Centre of Excellence (India), BISR analyst Yuri Yarmolinsky, head of the SCO and BRICS Research Center, attended on April 25 a lecture organized by Indian partners themed “When the Tables Turn: The Global South in an Era of Instability.”

DAKSHIN is a personal initiative of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, announced at the 1st Voice of Global South Summit in November 2023. It aims to share best practices between countries of the Global South in areas such as healthcare, technology, and agriculture.

The lecture participants emphasized that the Global South states, as the majority of the world, need a new world order. This requires a qualitatively new perception of the processes taking place in the world and non-standard thinking in order to move away from conventional ideas and start thinking independently.

The point of view is expressed that the Global South states need to work together to achieve the sustainable development goals. If India, Brazil, South Africa, and possibly Indonesia unite, they will be able to turn into a global “pole of meanings” that no one can ignore, and this will provide these countries with a chance to change the global balance of power.

BISR, as a leading state research center, has been cooperating with DAKSHIN since April 2024, including in the format of participation in similar thematic events.

A Memorandum of Understanding has been agreed upon and prepared for signing with Indian partners, which was confirmed by the organizers at the end of the lecture.
