China will host the SCO summit in Tianjin this autumn, which will be a key event during China's chairmanship of the organization. This was announced by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of China to Belarus Zhang Wenchuan, answering a question from a BelTA correspondent before a thematic lecture at the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Research on cooperation in the SCO.
"I am very pleased to share views on the SCO development with colleagues from the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Research, the country's leading think tank and a reputable institution in the SCO study in the country. Many experts involved in the study of international and regional issues are actively cooperating with their Chinese colleagues here and have achieved positive results. Today, my Belarusian friends and I will discuss topics such as the history of the SCO's development, the successes achieved, the essence of the "Shanghai spirit," the importance of Belarus' accession to the SCO, and cooperation between China and Belarus within the organization. I will also be happy to hear proposals on the SCO development," the diplomat stressed.
He also drew attention to the fact that last year, during the SCO Astana Summit, China assumed the chairmanship of the organization, and Belarus became the SCO Member State.
"China is actively promoting its work under its chairmanship. This autumn, China will host the SCO Summit in Tianjin, which will be a key event during China's chairmanship. I am confident that with the support of all Member States, including Belarus, the summit will be a success," stressed the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China.
This year, the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Research will host a series of thematic lectures by ambassadors of SCO Member States accredited in Belarus under the auspices of the SCO and BRICS Research Center. After our country joined this organization in July 2024, the BISR was granted the status of the SCO National Research Center. Under this status, the BISR actively cooperates with the SCO Forum and its Consortium of Economic Think Tanks. In order to implement the plans set in practice, on April 16, the Institute hosted a lecture by Zhang Wenchuan, Master of Law, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to the Republic of Belarus.
BISR Director Oleg Makarov noted the deep symbolism of the fact that the lecture series is opened by the official representative of China, the current chairman in the SCO in 2024-2025. He stressed the importance of the participation in the event of think tankers from the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Research, as well as students, undergraduates, and postgraduates from universities. The invitation went out to those who are directly involved in the topic of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
