On Lukashenkoʹs Statements During the Collective Security Treaty Organization Summit

Conservation, enhancement and development

At the regular session of the CSTO Collective Security Council, which was held last week in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, the President of Belarus once again demonstrated that our country is a consistent supporter of the development of this military-political organization. Alexander Lukashenko emphasized that the situation in the world is getting worse from year to year, the norms and principles of international law are being replaced by some subjective and situationally changeable rules, tools of military and information blackmail. The arms race is rapidly gaining momentum. According to the Belarusian leader, in the new paradigm of international relations, the CSTO should become one of the military-political pillars of the emerging security architecture of the Eurasian continent, setting a trend for the entire regional security agenda.

Olga Lazorkina, analyst at the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Research, recalls that this is not the first time the world community has asked questions about how well our world is organized, whether all countries are really equal members of it:

– The answers are obvious. Indicators have become much worse in many areas. The term "golden billion" is firmly entrenched in the information space, narrow elite clubs (G7), forums that dictate economic rules (Davos), and many other formats have emerged. Today, it is important to understand: are we just asking each other questions again, or do we really intend to change the quality of international relations?  Fortunately for our planet, most countries understand that the world will not survive World War III.

The II International Conference on Eurasian Security, which was held in Minsk, according to the analyst, clearly showed how great the concern about the escalation is, how persistently representatives from various countries are looking for a way out of the situation, how it is necessary for everyone not to hide behind fences, but to talk and jointly develop measures for peaceful coexistence:

– For Belarus, multipolarity is not just a politological term, it is the basis for the country’s development and ensuring security in a broad context. In our opinion, equality, not exclusivity, should be the head of the political lexicon of the modern era. Not destruction and abolition, but preservation, enhancement and development.

For Belarus and, I am convinced, for many countries of the world, they are the footholds of the future world order. Undoubtedly, multipolarity is not a panacea for conflicts and wars. But competition and ambition can and should be reasonable, and disputes and disagreements should be constructive. The number of people with higher education in the world is growing every year, so are we really unable to find common ground?

The process of working on the mistakes of the past has been launched, and it is important to bring it to its logical end, Olga Lazorkina believes:

 – As history shows, neither state is an ideal to follow. We all go through ups and downs. But the future has always been in the hands of those who can stand up and move forward.
