The issue of electoral sovereignty is given great attention in the Belarusian legislation. This was told by BISR Director Oleg Makarov to reporters before the start of the international round table "Ensuring electoral security and countering interference in elections: the experience of Belarus."
"Obviously, elections today are the starting point when the social contract is "repointed", BISR Director said. "In this regard, in the course of election campaigns, risks increase in relation to any state. Therefore, the issue of electoral sovereignty, i.e. the ability of the state to make decisions about its future independently, according to the will of its people, is given great attention in Belarusian legislation. The National Security Concept of the Republic of Belarus defines electoral security as one of the key areas and one of the most important areas of security.
According to Oleg Makarov, issues related to preventing risks arising during electoral processes in countries around the world will be discussed during the round table today.
"It should be understood how countries can build their systems to ensure the free expression of the will of citizens and at the same time ensure the security of the electoral process," Oleg Makarov summed up.
