Information security: new challenges in the context of the pandemic

Today, BISR analysts Vitaly Punchenko, Ekaterina Rechits and Vitaly Demirov participated in online International parliamentary conference: "Global challenges and threats within COVID-19 pandemic context: terrorism and violent extremism".

The BISR report "Information security: new challenges under pandemic" paid special attention to the analysis of the existing information trends that emerged under the influence of the pandemic:

  • raising the information field profile for society;
  • flexibility and mobility of the media space which could instantly match the current market conditions;
  • radicalization and conflict of the media agenda;
  • "information cocoons" formation;
  • strengthening digital segregation; rumors and fakes contents;
  • polyphony and fragmented consciousness;
  • drift towards "digital" dictatorship;
  • information nihilism.

The BISR analysts proposed to focus the international community efforts both on identifying signs of extremism in the information field, and on preventing of such manifestations through early identification of threats to the national security in the activity of information resources. This requires elaborating relevant criteria and methodology both at the country and the international level, as well as a multi-stage system of preventive and other positive impact on the information field.

The ultimate goal of the information policy improvement is to create a healthy and stress-resistant media space as a field for dialogue, arena for making constructive decisions, platform for solving problems and opening opportunities to people.
